Third-Wave CBT Approaches

From around the 1990s onward, a number of “third-wave” approaches to cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) have become increasingly prominent that emphasis mindfulness and acceptance, in a manner often resembling Buddhist meditation practices.  These differ from traditional CBT in shifting emphasis  from the role of automatic thoughts on to one’s subsequent responses to them.  Several differently mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches developed around the same time in different parts of Britain and America.  They include:

A growing body of scientific evidence now supports the efficacy of mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches in treating a variety of problems, particularly certain forms of anxiety and depression.
